Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET for short) is one of Bangladesh's leading public engineering universities. It is located in Chattogram district of the south-eastern Chattogram division. About four and a half thousand students study here at undergraduate and postgraduate level in engineering, architecture, urban planning and science.

Introduction

Location: Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology is located in Chattogram district of Chattogram division. It stands beside the Chattogram–Kaptai highway in ‘Pahartali' union of ‘Raozan' upazila.

History: With the aim of establishing an engineering institution in Chattogram, it began its journey on 28 December 1968 as “Chittagong Engineering College” under the engineering faculty of the University of Chittagong. Admissions began from the 1968–69 academic year. On 1 July 1986 it was upgraded to Bangladesh Institute of Technology (BIT), Chittagong. Later, on 1 September 2003, it was given the status of a full engineering university by government ordinance.

CUET in the Liberation War: in Bangladesh's Liberation War of 1971, two students of CUET, Tarek Huda and Md Shah, were martyred. Two residential halls for men are now named after them: Shaheed Mohammad Shah Hall and Shaheed Tarek Huda Hall.

Campus: Adorned with natural beauty, the CUET campus is spread over 171 acres. Inside the campus there are separate buildings for the different faculties, an administrative building, an auditorium, a library building, workshops, laboratories, student halls, teachers' quarters, a canteen, a Shaheed Minar, a branch of Sonali Bank, a post office, a mosque, a confectionery and a medical centre. Within the campus area there is also a natural lake, several hills and trees of many kinds. There is a very large field inside the campus. Besides this, “Chittagong University of Engineering School and College” is located inside the university campus.

1. A beautiful campus: Wherever the eye falls on this campus there is green and more green. A concrete road runs down the middle. A lovely lake flows beside the CUET field, and in front of the administrative building there is the “Padma Pukur”. At the centre of the campus stands “Swadhinata Chattar”, a memorial sculpture in remembrance of the martyrs of the Liberation War. There are beautiful departmental buildings too. Anyone who sees all this is bound to be caught in CUET's spell.

2. University life free of session jams: In a word, there are few universities in this country as free of session jams as CUET. If you study properly you can pass out in less than four years. CUET's various programmes are enough to disprove the saying that “engineering means nothing but grind, with no fun in it”.

3. Hall life: The main joy and excitement of CUET students is centred on the halls. Most programmes on campus are held as hall-based competitions. Various programmes and sports are arranged in the halls all year round. There is also a monthly hall fest each month and one huge annual hall fest every year.

4. Festive CUET: CUET's various programmes are enough to disprove the saying that “engineering means nothing but grind, with no fun in it”. Beyond the celebration of days such as Independence Day, Victory Day, University Day and Pohela Boishakh, the annual sports competition and every departmental programme will thoroughly charm you.

5. An automated library: The CUET central library is the first automated library among the public university libraries of the country. Students can study in the library from 9 am to 8 pm. You will find almost all the books you need in the library.

6. Something beyond study: Beyond study you can involve yourself in many kinds of work on this campus if you wish. There are various organisations here: CUET Debating Society, CUET Theatre, CUET Film Society, CUET Photography Society, CUET Radio, Protidhwani, Dream and Try. By joining these you can readily build your skills.

7. Unstoppable CUET: CUET is moving forward at an unstoppable pace. CUET's labs are self-sufficient in all the necessary equipment, so you can learn everything hands-on. Seminars and fests are also held at CUET one after another, and you will benefit from them.

8. Inspiring CUET: On the CUET campus you will meet many inspiring people around you. The seniors and teachers here are very helpful, and you will get every kind of help from them. Graduates of CUET are at present working in very large organisations at home and abroad, which will serve as a storehouse of inspiration for you.

Medical centre: CUET has a medical centre for providing primary treatment. It has 20 beds, and the necessary number of doctors are engaged in treatment here. Seriously ill patients are taken to a larger hospital by the medical centre's own ambulance. There are about 5 ambulances here.

Mosque: For the students, staff and teachers living on campus, CUET has a mosque of 560 square metres. There are also mosques in front of each hall.

Canteen: There are 3 canteens inside the university. Two of them are on the left of the roundabout on the way in from the university gate, and the other is behind the civil engineering building. Construction of a cafeteria building is also under way.

Auditorium: The university campus has a central auditorium complex with 500 seats. All modern facilities are available in it. At various times of the year seminars, cultural events, fairs, film festivals and the like are arranged in the auditorium.

Library: The library has provision for about 200 students to study together in an air-conditioned setting. The CUET library has a huge collection of references and journals. Five different daily newspapers are kept every day, and all the regular editions of a number of magazines are kept. There is photocopying provision for students here. There are also enough computers with internet connection for students to use.

Transport: For the transport of CUET's teachers, students, officers and staff, the university's own 10 buses run between the campus and the city on weekly working days.

Admission

At CUET students are admitted to Level-1 Term-1 of the undergraduate programme. Selection for admission is made through a competitive examination. The admission form is usually released in October or November. A candidate can collect a form if they have a minimum grade point in mathematics, physics, chemistry and English in the higher secondary examination. To give candidates the chance to sit the admission test, a shortlist of the first 10,000 by highest grade point in those 4 subjects is published. The admission test is taken for these 10,000 candidates, and the first 830 on the merit list are admitted. The admission test is held in two sections, “A” and “B”. Section “A” is for the engineering departments and the urban planning department only, while section “B” is for the engineering departments, urban planning and architecture. The section “A” test is taken in written form: a 600-mark paper held over 3 hours. Candidates for section “B” must also sit a two-hour freehand drawing test. For admission to master's and PhD programmes the CGPA obtained at undergraduate level is considered, and candidates are interviewed.
